The five physical principles are the foundation for movement (standing, stepping, transition, balance and posture) and delivering effective strikes to targets. The principles should also be present and demonstrated in every kata, yaksuko, combination and freeform.
By applying these principles into everything you do, your movements and effectiveness are elevated. When learning a new technique, reflect on these principles, deconstruct the technique, apply the principles and reconstruct the technique to improve its effectiveness, to improve yourself.
Note that one principle cannot be done without the others. One principle may be the primary driver of the technique, but the technique cannot be effective without employing the other four principles, especially 'lock up' in the delivery of the energy of the technique at the 'point of impact’.
Once we have mastered the physical, we can then move into studying the mental and spiritual elements of the training. Mastering the physical starts with mastering the Five Physical Principles in every aspect of your training.
Ask your instructor to explain and demonstrate these principles in more detail.
